Yusuf Yarımbaş

Hi, I'm Yusuf. I'm a third-year Information Systems and Technologies student at Bilkent University, and most of my time goes into learning and trying to get better at what I do.

For a while I worked as a teaching assistant for two of my university's introductory programming courses, first CTIS152 and then CTIS151. I helped about sixty students through their labs. During the same period I also tutored a student preparing for the university entrance exam. I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to. Trying to explain something to someone shows you how shaky your own understanding really is, and forces you to think it through again. I came out of it sharper on the technical side, and being around people that much added something on the social side too.

What pulls me most is backend development. I like building the parts users don't see, the ones that keep everything running underneath. I mostly work with JavaScript, Node.js, Java, and C, and lately I've been spending more time on databases and system design.

I have a few things going on outside of code, too. I've played chess since I was a kid and captained my high school team. I play music as well, though I'm an amateur on the saz, guitar, and violin. Cinema is also one of the areas that interests me; reflecting on what I watch, researching the philosophical and artistic background of the story, and focusing on cinematographic details are just as enjoyable for me as watching the film itself. When the weather lets me I go out shooting street and landscape photography. I read and talk about history and philosophy whenever I get the chance. And I can't help following whatever new science or technology piece catches my eye when I am surfing on YouTube.
